The Long Conversation

Because feeling well is rarely about one conversation.

Cover: two chairs, one unbroken line.

From the editor

A letter written slowly, a few times a year, about what happens between appointments — the part of illness that unfolds at home, at work, in families, in waiting rooms. It draws on clinical practice, medical anthropology and the accounts patients give of their own lives. No advice columns, no wellness, no cures: just the longer conversation that a fifteen-minute consultation cannot hold.

  • A letter: what the clinic keeps teaching me about listening
  • From the practice: long-term conditions and the questions patients carry home
  • Reading: clinical judgement, medical anthropology and the ordinary life of illness
