Rather than treating patients simply as subjects of research, PPI creates a role for them in asking what should be studied and which questions are most relevant to their lives.

When patients help shape the questions being asked, research can begin from the realities of people’s lives rather than assumptions about them.
The result can be questions that are more relevant, more useful and more meaningful when studied at scale.
